The majority of dogs that are problem barkers are seeking attention because they’ve associated barking with you letting them inside, or are just plain bored. If it’s the latter reason, try giving him something to occupy his time with while you’re gone to train your dog not to bark at everything out of boredom. There are many toys that you can put treats inside of so that he has to work at getting his food. Kongs are a good example, which are ideal for hiding peanut butter inside of. Not only are these good distractions to keep your dog from barking, but they’re also good mental stimulation too.

When you are home, using a startling sound may help you train your dog not to bark at everything. Saying, “No,” in a loud, firm way is a good place to start. So is clapping sharply when he barks at something inappropriate. Make sure you remember to use treats as a reward, or a clicker, so that your dog understands not barking is the behavior you desire out of him. Whatever method or sound you decide to use, just remember to stay consistent.

If nothing else seems to work to train your dog not to bark at everything, you may want to consider trying out one of the anti-barking collars that use citronella. These are a gentle alternative to the traditional bark collar. When your dog barks, the collar releases a spray of citronella- for most dogs, this is an effective method of training. Although if you do decide to use a citronella anti-barking collar, remember that it isn’t for constant, long-term use
