Things to Remember While House Breaking your dog

The key to house breaking a dog is patience, and a lot of it! Just like a toddler, they aren’t going to immediently understand that their humans aren’t overjoyed to step in a squishy mess every morning on the way to the coffee maker. When you bring that new puppy home, remember that he isn’t able to hold it very long. Take care to let him out after every meal to relieve himself- this alone should help with the amount of messes you’ll have to clean up while you’re in the process of house breaking your dog. And make sure that you watch him for any signs that he has to potty, such as becoming agitated, sniffing the floor, or turning around in circles. If you have other indoor pets, make sure that the your new addition can’t smell any urine on the floor in places that you don’t want him to relieve himself. While he’s still learning the routine, you may find it useful to use a crate or a baby gate to keep him in a confined area. A very important aspect of housebreaking your dog is to remember that you can’t discipline him hours after he’s made the mess- make sure he understands that the actual act of urinating or defecating on your floor is what displeases you. Try firmly saying, “No,” whenever you can catch him during the actual act. And remember to give your dog adequate time to go to the bathroom when you do take him outside for potty breaks. Puppies especially may make several stops before they are finished and ready to go back inside.
