Teach your dog to not jump on visitors
There are reasons why a dog may jump on a visitor to your home. It could be to dominate; or to greet the visitor; or because he has been, albeit unknowingly, given treats for this behavior in the past.
When inviting someone to your home, inform the visitor that you have a dog in training to stop him/her from jumping on visitors. For training purposes, you should have a spray bottle filled with clean, clear water.
If the dog jumps on the visitor when he/she enters, say in a firm and commanding voice, “Down! Heel!” The choice of words used is up to the trainer. “Stop” and “Stay” among others, can also be used.
If the dog listens, ask the visitor to pet or rub him while saying such phrases as “good boy” or “good dog.” This will be the reward for being obedient. If the dog does not obey, ask the visitor to turn his/her back toward the animal, cross his/her arms and ignore the dog. If the dog does not stop, spray the animal in the eyes with the spray bottle of clean
water. This should calm the dog down within a few seconds. If this still does not calm him/her, the pet should be place in his/her carrier for a “time out”.
Avoid playing games that encourage the dog to jump. The other thing is that the dog should be greeted at his/her level. Stoop when entering the home from work or shopping. This removes the need for the dog to jump up.
