How to Train Your Dog to Sit
Training your dog to do specific things is great for the dog. The more things you train your dog to do, the smarter he becomes. Doing “tricks” is very much a mental exercise, in addition to a physical workout. When wanting the dog to learn to “sit,” you may want to try the following:
First, you need to sit down on a chair. Call your dog and allow him to sit in front of you. Talk to your dog in a soothing voice and just sit for a while.
Pet the dogs back in long strokes, while slowly getting up from your chair, continuously speaking the words, “Sit” and “Stay.”
Stand beside him, still in his view. If he stands up, try gently pushing his hindquarters down, while saying, “Sit.” At this point, with any amount of suc
cess, give the dog a reward. Do this several times.
Allow for praise and a few strokes!
Move to another spot in the room, saying, “Come here.” Then say, “Sit.” If he does not respond, again gently push the hindquarters while softly saying, “Sit.” With success, always give verbal and snack rewards.
Repeating these steps for several training sessions will create what you want from the dog. This is a good time to teach your dog to shake hands. Allowing for a bit of excitement for “sitting” is a natural transition into the dog raising his paw. Once he truly knows each word, then you can separate tasks.
Allow your dog to run after several “tricks.” It is a reward and a good break for both of you.
