Good Snacks to Use for Training Your Dog
Training your dog is good for both you and the animal. It provides predictability and an opportunity for good behavior. Everyone enjoys a reward for a job well done. While you may enjoy another form of reward, your dog appreciates treats. What are the guidelines for choosing treats?
It is important to give your dog variety, in all things. This will pique its curiosity and keep it healthier and more alert. Try a certain treat for a day, while watching the dog’s responsiveness to it. Then try another variety of treat the next day.
It is a key element of good training to find treats that can be eaten quickly and digested readily. Treats, such as dog biscuits and rawhide c
hews, can be given to the dog at a moment of relaxation.
Reserve certain “tried and true” treats as “training” treats only.
If you are into feeding your dog meat, save broken-up pieces as a reward for the more difficult tasks or “tricks.”
At moments, try tossing M&M’s to your dog as a reward for distance training. Have the dog “sit” in a particular spot and keep moving back, while encouraging it to “stay.” Then toss the candy, saying, “catch.” At first, go only a short distance and then longer and longer distances. If you begin holding the candy in front of you between your fingers, it will allow the dog to learn to focus deliberately and to pay attention.
When giving treats for a job well done, speak kind words and show your dog just how pleased you are. For variety, rotate treats daily.
