1) Prior to any form of training its usually best to make sure your pet understands what it is you want from him/her. This is where commands like Stop, Halt, Sit, Heel, and Stay come into play. Make sure to be consistent with the words you use so your pet can memorize them and know what they mean.
2) Once you have the command words in place you may wish to practice using them while indoors first as a safety measure. While your pet is
off his/her leash, use commands like “Stop, Halt, Freeze, Return, No (or whatever other words you wish to use)”. At this point you should start also practice using your hand as a barrier when using words like “Stop, Stay, Halt” to ensure your pet remains still in that spot.
3) Once you have gotten your pet to follow your commanding words indoors it is time to slowly bring your pet outdoors. Keep in mind there will now be distractions to sway your pet. With this in mind you may wish to start practicing outdoors but in a small corner of the yard and then widening the area as your pet’s performance and understanding allows. Keep in mind this is still going to take some practicing and you have to use the command words when your pet is not listening as well as use positive reinforcement to praise good behavior.
